Washoe County School District Resolution and Proclamation BLACK HISTORY MONTH also referred to as African American History Month WHEREAS, from the inception of the United States, African Americans have been part of its landscape of people of diverse ethnic and racial groups, where today, virtually all cultures are represented; and WHEREAS, in 1926, led by Historian Carter G. Woodson and a number of other intellectuals such as W.E.B. DuBois, Theodore Herzel, and Randolph Bourne who believed that modern America should embrace the cultural uniqueness that newcomers brought with them and that American Democracy could sustain our uniqueness’s in harmony; and WHEREAS, as we celebrate Black History Month which is also referred to as National African American History Month, let us all commit ourselves to raising awareness and appreciation of the contributions of African Americans throughout American history; and WHEREAS, Washoe County School District is committed to equity in education for all students and to provide a learning environment that is reflective of the cultures, traditions, customs and historic legacies that comprise the District’s population. Let us teach our children to rise above brutality and bigotry and to be champions of liberty, human dignity, and equality on all levels and let us rededicate ourselves to affirming the promise of our great nation that all are created equal. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees hereby honors African Americans for their many contributions to our country and the world by recognizing the month of February 2010 as National African American History Month in the Washoe County School District ; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees hereby recognizes that school administrators, educators and students have honored this observance with appropriate instruction, programs, ceremonies, and activities. Independent Program/System Audits The District has undertaken a series of independent audits of programs and systems operations.
